The “Urbanization” of Our National Anthem

The NHL's Winter Classic was held yesterday and all I can recall from the entire telecast was the horrific defecation that took place before the puck was dropped...

Even though P.L.'s intro was a stark harbinger of what was to come, "...and winner of BET, NAACP and many other performing awards...", I foolishly remained hopeful the disembowelment would be tolerable.  Oh how I was mistaken.

Now, granted, if you can look past the over-the-top vibrato (which makes it sound the VCR (callback?) is in the fritz with a modulation issue) - a technique now aped by every white singer on the planet (save maybe the dude fronting GWAR) - LaBelle holds relatively true to the actual notes/cadence until the bitter end...when things morph into a botched 3rd trimester abortion.

Yes, all cities are filled with, ahem, "minorities" (see: blacks)... but Philly has always been known as a town full of hard-working, blue collar honkies with generational axes to grind, even if against no one in particular.  But things changed (see: Demographics), and by the mid 80s "they'd" elected "their" first black Mayor.  Granted there was a brief 539 respite, but the place has now gone full blown Wesley Snipes, never to return.

The NHL and NBC did what was expected of them (what's expected of all of us):  they held their nose and pocketed their sense of dignity in the name of progress.  Dare I ask: can anyone stop the urbanization (Blacksploitation?) of our National Anthem?

  • Now, I only went to community college, but I don't hear/see anything wrong with the way she sang the anthem. Am I missing something here? Are you just mad that a black woman sang the anthem at a hockey game?
If so, then I can get on board with that. Blacks should not be allowed to sing, let alone speak, in public.
    Spartan 2012.

I drank a whole bottle of 10 Cane on New Years while we played Balderdash. Crazy night, I tell you. I spent all of Sunday on the couch sipping Gatorade. What a great way to start the new year. Really sets the tone, ya know?

  • I'm guessing Carl Lewis wasn't available? I've seen worse, but not many.

NYE in Shitlanta was disappointingly uneventful. I think all the news stories about PD not taking any shit from anyone toned things down a bit. Only two news stories about people getting hit by stray bullets in their living rooms yesterday.

Colder than a witch's tit out there today. Fuck me running.

  • I didn't listen to this because I hate singing. Or maybe I hate listening to people sing and then listening to other people rate their performance. Ever since American Idol oozed onto our TVs it seems like everyone is a fucking expert and can tell when someone's pitch is a little off or whatever. I don't care, they all sing better than me and, in the end, aren't going to be relevant at all.

    Fuck singing.

  • NYE - house party, then out for like 3 hours right around midnight, then back to the house party. Uneventful, but fun. Went out with the Doc's crew, which was nice because two are smoke-tastic and were slutted up, and one's a solid 7 lesbian on the prowl. Good entertainment.

Since we're doing local weather reports, the high here today is 56 - you would think it was the apocalypse the way these people are reacting to jacket weather.

Someone is bitter. What do you think? Thumb up Thumb down -2

  • I drove to work with my windows down.

  • If you want to see/hear a shitty anthem, see if you can find the one from the Carrier Classic back in November when MSU played UNC on Veteran's Day. A suppossed "Motown Recording Artist" sang and it was one of the most shittastic renditions I've ever heard. All I could find was the last few seconds, but I guess thats all you need to hear.
